About Blackpool

Originally a miniscule Hamlet in middle ages, Blackpool started to become a major holiday resort around 1850 when access became easier via railways for people in the North West and beyond.

This also encouraged more people to live in the area and by the early 1880s this miniscule hamlet had already grown to a large borough with around 15,000 people.

By the early 1900s the seaside town inhabitants had increased to around 50,000 through its tourism attractions such as piers, promenades and entertainment together with fairgrounds, theatres.

During the early 1950s the population of this major seaside town had grown exponentially to almost 150,000.

Every year millions of visitors from all over the UK from Scotland to Cornwall visit Blackpool which is famous for its Blackpool Tower when typically in the 1950s children in coaches from Bolton, Bury, Burnley and Blackburn could win a sixpence for ‘who spotted the Blackpool Tower first’.

Along with Its world famous tower, Blackpool is renowned for its huge plethora of hotels and amenities such as the magnificent Tower Ballroom so often featured on National TV, not to mention major political party conferences.

On a lighter note people are entertained by the huge diversification of entertainment facilities such as the remarkable Blackpool Illuminations, Water Park, Zoo, Pleasure Beach and superb transport system including a marvellous modern tram service.
